Lent 3 B – The Sabbath

Today Catholic Christians celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent.

In the first reading of today, we read what has become known as the Ten Commandments.

One of those commandments has to do with rest.  We read:

“Remember to keep holy the sabbath day.  Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord, your God.  No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you.  In six days, the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested.  That is why the Lord has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy” (Exodus 20: 8-11).

The early Church leaders acknowledged that one day a week should be used for rest, and it should honor God in a special way.  But, instead of having that day as Saturday, they changed it to Sunday and called it “the Lord’s Day” in honor of the Resurrection, the highest feast day of the Church.

In the above photo, we see people of the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Anís going to Mass.  Anís is a community of Curarén, F.M., Honduras.
