Pope Francis established September 1stas the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. September 1 marks the beginning of a special “creation time” that goes from September 1 through October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
During this special time, Catholic Christians are called to pray for the wisdom and courage to care for our planet’s plants, animals, air, and water. And, we are called to remember to pray for the poor and marginalized, the prisoners and all abused people.
We can celebrate this special time by planting a tree or giving to groups that seek to become better stewards of God’s creation.
In the above photo, we see a scene from Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. This is next to Wilmington, North Carolina where our sister parish, the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, is located. The priests of the Diocese of Raleigh have their annual retreat each September at this beach.
