On this Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, Respect Life Sunday, we encounter an interesting passage in the Gospel of St. Luke. The apostles had just asked Jesus to increase their faith. We read,
“Jesus replied, ‘If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you’” (Luke 17: 6).
Sometimes, we use the word “faith” to mean a strong belief in a teaching of our religion, such as a belief in heaven or angels. Other times, faith can mean complete trust in someone, such as God, or in something, such as a belief system.
But no matter how strong our faith is, it is common to have doubts. Doubts are uncertainties. Doubts are not “sins” or deliberate acts against love. Only God knows the whole picture, and we’re not God. So, let’s let God be God, and we can do the best we can with what we have to lead good lives and help to make this a better world. We can start by seeing Christ in every human being and acting accordingly.
