Today is the feast of three archangels we read about in the Bible: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Though we often call them “saints,” they are actually angels – archangels to be specific.
Archangel Gabriel is the patron of communications such as radio, television, Internet, and the like.
Archangel Raphael is a patron of the sick, nurses, physicians, matchmakers, marriages, travelers, the blind, and Catholic Studies, among other things and places.
The archangel that is most important to us here in the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa is the Archangel Michael, for he is the patron of the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa and the City of Tegucigalpa (capital of Honduras). Michael is also a patron of mariners, police, and soldiers.
In our parish of San Francisco de Asís, four of our 90+ churches are dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel: San Miguelito in the pueblo of the same name; two Curarén communities of Chaparral and Golondrina; and the Alubarén community of El Hatillo. The last-mentioned community is currently building a larger church for they have outgrown their current one.
In the photo above, we see a statue of St. Michael the Archangel in the church of San Miguel in San Miguelito, F.M., Honduras.
