December is a very busy month here in the mountain parish of San Francisco de Asís. Not only are farmers engaged in the second harvest of the year for crops such as corn and beans, they are also busy harvesting coffee.
Coffee grows well in cooler climates. Some parts of our parish, which covers 250-square miles, is cool enough to grow coffee. Other parts, such as where I live in Reitoca, the weather is hot all year round, so coffee doesn’t grow here.
Unlike crops such as corn and beans, which have two growing seasons, coffee only has one season per year.
