The Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa, of which the parish of San Francisco de Asís (Reitoca) is part, has divisions called “deaneries.” A deanery is a cluster of parishes in a specific location. Deaneries host many functions that bring parishes together in ways that an entire archdiocese (or diocese) cannot do.
Our deanery is composed of 4 parishes, those of the municipalities of Lepaterique, Ojojona, Reitoca, and Sabanagrande. When you think of a “parish,” don’t think of 1 church where everyone in the parish attends Mass! Reitoca, for example, has 87 churches. So, our deanery, called the San Francisco de Asís Deanery, probably has a couple hundred churches represented.
We have formal deanery meetings about every other month. In the photo above, we see the gathering of our deanery right before Christmas in Ojojona. In addition to the meeting, we had food and a gift exchange. In the photo above are 5 priests and 11 lay representatives from the 4 parishes.
