Deaneries are geographical areas in a diocese or archdiocese composed of a number of parishes. The deanery that the parish of San Francisco de Asís is the deanery that has the same name. There are four parishes of this deanery: Lepaterique, Ojojona, Reitoca, and Sabanagrande. Each parish has many churches and chapels. The largest parish, in terms of churches, is Reitoca; we have 87 churches of the parish plus three more under construction. The number of Catholics represented in this deanery is tens of thousands.
In the photo above, we see a deanery meeting on the deck of the Four Martyrs House on the Holy Cross campus in Reitoca. The house, more commonly called “Fr. Bob’s house,” is named in honor of four missionaries who were killed on December 2, 1980, in El Salvador. The four martyrs were: Maryknoll Sisters Ita Ford and Maura Clarke; Ursuline Sr. Dorothy Kazel; and lay missionary Jean Donovan. Sr. Dorothy and Jean were members of the Diocese of Cleveland (Ohio) Mission Team.
