Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the Dedication of St. John Lateran.  It is the only archbasilica in the world, and it is the cathedral (seat) of the Bishop of Rome, that is, the pope.  This church, built in 324, is dedicated to Jesus in his title of “Most Holy Savior” and secondarily  to Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.  It is considered the “Mother and Head of All Churches in Rome and the World.”

Though it is the pope’s church, it is not located in the nation of Vatican City, but rather, in Rome, Italy.

The reason we celebrate the dedication of the building is not because of its particular beauty or history.  Rather, we celebrate it as the symbol of Christianity, especially the original Christianity – Catholic Christianity – and the pope.
