This Fourth Sunday of Easter is often called Good Shepherd Sunday, for in today’s Gospel passage from St. John (10: 11-18), Jesus calls himself “the good shepherd.”

In 1964, Pope Paul VI declared that henceforth, the Fourth Sunday of Easter would be known as World Day of Prayer for Vocations.  And although every human being has at least one vocation, today’s celebration focuses on an increase of vocations to the ordained priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life, and secular institutes.  We pray for this in response to Jesus’ command, “Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:38 and Lk 10:2).
