In today’s reading from the First Letter of John, we read, “Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth” (1 John 3: 18).
St. John’s message is just as important today as it was in the day of the early Church. In fact, today in the United States, we even have common sayings that reflect this message such as: “Walk the walk, not just talk the talk” and “Talk is cheap.”
Perhaps you have met people who can “talk the talk” very well, but in their lives, they fail miserably to live up to the message they’re talking about. John admonishes us to not fall into that pitfall. If you say, for example, that you are a good follower of Jesus, then how do you show kindness to your fellow human beings? How to do welcome the stranger, give drink to the thirsty, feed the hungry, care for the sick, console those who are sorrowing, and the like?
In the photo above, we see a woman in the Curarén community of El Anís preparing food for hungry folks who have come to celebrate a Mass on their church’s feast day, December 12, Our Lady of Guadalupe. She is putting her faith into action, which is what John was telling Christians more than 2,000 years ago!
