In this photo, we see the people of the Curarén community of Emituca getting ready to celebrate Mass in their new church. In the altar area hangs the Black Christ of Esquipulas.

The Black Christ of Esquipulas is a darkened wooden image of Christ enshrined within the Cathedral Basilica of Esquipulas in Esquipulas, Guatemala.  Though the origins of this image are shrouded in history, many historians believe it came from the late Sixteenth Century.  In time, it became associated with miraculous powers.  In Central American nations, it is a popular image of Jesus.
