Today is Flag Day in the United States, a day when Americans honor the flag of the country and what it stands for.
The first American flag was sewn by Betsy Ross and adopted by the Second Continental Congress. That flag, shown above, had 7 red and 6 white stripes, and a field of blue with 13 stars. Each star represented the first 13 colonies, later called states. Since that first flag, the flag has been altered every time a new state is added, for each state is represented by a star. Today, the American flag has 50 stars, for there are now 50 states. All the American flags have retained the 7 red and 6 white stripes.
The two most common nicknames for the American flag are the “Stars and Stripes” and “Old Glory.”
Traditionally, Americans fly a flag outside their house on this day as a sign of patriotism.
