Today is Good Friday, the only day of the year when there is no Mass celebrated in Catholic churches. This is the day we commemorate the passion and death of Jesus.
Instead of Mass, there is a traditional Good Friday service that has three parts: the reading of the passion and death of Jesus according to John; the veneration of the cross; and a Communion service.
In some communities, parishioners have a live Vía Crucis or Way of the Cross, enacting the passion and death of Jesus. In the photo above, we see Jesus carrying his cross in a live Vía Crucis held at our sister parish, the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary in Wilmington, North Carolina, by the Hispanic community of the parish.
