In the United States of America, many of the states – but not all – celebrate October 12thas Columbus Day, a day to honor the memory of Christopher Columbus and his accidental “discovery” of the Americas in 1492.
For many Catholic Christians in the United States, especially those of Italian heritage, Christopher Columbus is a special hero for he was also a Catholic. There is an international group of Catholic men that was founded in the United States of America, in fact, called the Knights of Columbus. In the above photo, we see the past pastor of our parish, Padre Alex, with some Knights of Columbus outside the church of our sister parish, the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary in Wilmington, North Carolina. Fr. Alex was visiting Wilmington at the time of this photo.
In many lands, especially in some Latin American countries, this day is called El Día de la Raza, a day to celebrate not Christopher Columbus, but rather, Hispanic heritage.
Feliz El Dia de la Raza.
