Happy New Year to you and those you love!
January 1 celebrates not only Saint Mary in her ancient Christian title “Mother of God,” but since 1968, it celebrates World Day of Peace.
This feast was begun in 1968 by Pope Paul VI and was inspired by Pope John XXIII’s encyclical, Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) and Pope Paul VI’s encyclical, Populorum Progressio (Development of the People).
The theme of this year’s World Day of Peace is “Forgive us our trespasses: grant us your peace.” In Catholic Christianity, “peace” refers not just the absence of war. It also refers to working to create a world where humans show love for each other, where violence is absent, where people have human and civil rights they deserve as children of God.
The path to peace begins with each of us and spreads from there. What actions can you take to make this a more peaceful world?
I pray you have the most spiritually wonderful year of your life!
Happy New Year!
