Today we honor a great missionary priest, St. Patrick, Apostle of Ireland.
Nobody is sure where Patrick was from, but most think it was from somewhere in the British Isles. As a youth, he was captured by Irish raiders and sold as a slave in Ireland. There, he worked as a shepherd for six years until he escaped, possibly to France.
He was made a bishop at the age of 43 and became a missionary to Ireland.
One of the symbols Patrick is said to have used to show the idea of the Blessed Trinity, was the shamrock. Just as the one shamrock has three separate leaves but is but one plant, so God is One with three Divine Persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
