Tomorrow all over the United States of America (U.S.A.), people will be celebrating Thanksgiving.
For many Americans, like me, Thanksgiving is the second most popular of all holidays, the most important being Christmas.
The purpose of Thanksgiving is to give thanks to God for all of our blessings, such as for our families, friends, work, and education. Families and friends traditionally gather for turkey dinners with all the trimmings. All across the land, people will be saying, “Oh, I ate too much!” Then, they will loosen the belt on their pants.
One tradition that many people have on this day, is for each person to say something for which they are thankful. I will never forget the time that I was involved in this exercise in a psychiatric unit. I was co-leading a therapy group, and all of us were saying one thing for which we were thankful. When it came time for my colleague to say what she was thankful for, she replied, “The light above the stove in my kitchen.” Wow! Of course! I love that little light also. In fact, I always have the little light on in the evening.
The more I thought of her answer, the more I realized that there are zillions of things for which I am thankful, things such as colors, textures, flavors, and just being alive.
So, as we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving tomorrow, let’s remember the little things of life, as well as the big things, for which we are grateful. And then, give thanks.
Happy Thanksgiving!
