Helping other drivers

Here in the rural mountain areas where I live and work as a missionary priest, the roads are not paved except in four pueblos.  In the summer months (Nov. 1 – April 30), the roads are dusty.  In the winter months (May 1 – Oct. 31), the roads are often muddy, which makes them slippery and dangerous.

One form of community service that is frequently done is helping drivers who get into trouble on these roads.  In this photo, we see a truck that got stuck in a foot of mud going up one of the mountain roads near the Reitocan community of Sabaneta.  My driver Isaí (right in the photo), helped some other young men get the truck up the hill.  Isaí and I were behind this truck, so if it was not moved, we would not have been able to move.  Fortunately, my Toyota Hilux is very powerful and is able to navigate these roads.  However, many of the roads of the parish run right next to a cliff, so slipping off the road would be instant death.

You might wonder why I didn’t help try to push the truck.  Pushing trucks uphill in mud is not the strong suit for an 81-year-old man weighing 111 pounds!
