Tomorrow, Catholic Christians will celebrate Holy Thursday.  In the evening, at the beginning of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Lent officially ends for Catholic Christians, and we enter a 3-day period called Triduum.

One of the most unique things about the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is the washing of the feet.  In this custom, the priest washes the feet for some members of the assembly just as Jesus washed the feet of the apostles at the Last Supper.  In the photo above, we see some men from Curarén who played the part of the apostles at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, and I washed their feet.  Jesus washed the apostles’ feet to show them a new model of leadership that they should follow.  This is called the “servant-leader” model of leadership.  Instead of acting like a boss, the leader should be the servant of all.

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper also celebrates the symbolic founding of the ordained Catholic Christian priesthood, the founding of the Eucharist (Mass), and the institution of the Blessed Sacrament (Holy Communion).  So, this Mass is truly special!

Ordained priests view Holy Thursday as their “special day” of the year.
