In today’s reading from Paul’s Letter to the Romans (11: 13-15, 29-33), we hear Paul tell the non-Jewish (gentile) people, “I am the apostle to the Gentiles.” Although you and I believe that Jesus is the Messiah for all people, the idea that Jesus was for everyone was incredibly big news in his time. It was especially joyful news to the gentiles who had been left out of the Jewish vision of “salvation history.”
Then, in the Gospel reading today (Matthew 15: 21-28), we see how Jesus put Paul’s teaching into daily practice by healing a gentile Canaanite woman.
The moral of the stories is simple: Jesus came to the world as a Savior for all people, not just a select few. That is why Catholic Christians pray for the salvation of all people, for we believe his love and mercy are limitless, and with God, all things are possible. What incredibly great news that is!
