Today, we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. In the Gospel reading we have today, Jesus finds himself living in a desert for 40 days among wild beasts, while angels watched over him.
During Lent, many Catholic Christians like to do something special to strengthen their spiritual lives. Some do this by addition, that is, they add something to their lives they ordinarily do not do. Examples of this would be the person who decides to offer up a rosary each day.
Others use subtraction to strengthen their spiritual lives, giving up something they like to show that the spirit is stronger than the body. Examples of this would be the child who gives up candy during Lent or the adult who gives up television.
One thing you might consider this Lent is to perform a “random act of kindness” each day. Examples of this would be calling a friend you haven’t spoken to for a long time to say hello, visiting an elderly person in a nursing center, taking food to a person recovering from surgery, putting a surprise note in the lunchbox of your spouse or child, baking a special treat for your family, giving money to a charitable cause, or whatever. The sky’s the limit! Like many people, you just might find that performing random acts of kindness is a lot of fun in addition to being a demonstration to the queen of all virtues, love.
But whatever you choose to do special during Lent, I would advise you to keep it simple. You have your whole life to strengthen your spiritual life; you don’t need to do everything these six weeks!
