On this Second Sunday of Lent, we read the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus from the Gospel of St. Matthew (17: 1-9).
In the story, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John onto a mountain. Suddenly, Jesus’ clothes became dazzling white, and the long-deceased Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus. The apostles were astonished, and they wanted to honor Jesus, Moses, and Elijah equally. Suddenly, however, a shadow came over them and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
When the voice was finished speaking, Moses and Elijah had disappeared, leaving only Jesus with his disciples.
In the story, Moses represents the Law of the Old Testament, and Elijah represents the Prophets. The disappearance of Moses and Elijah is symbolic that the Old Testament law and prophecy have passed away, and now we need follow only Jesus, for he is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets.
