Today is Memorial Day in the United States, a national holiday. This holiday, celebrated on the last Monday of May each year, honors the men and women who gave their lives in the service of their country. Although it was originally created to honor those who gave their lives in the Civil War (1861-1865), it was later expanded to honor all those who lost their lives in the service of their country. It is very fitting, therefore, to take some time on Memorial Day to give thanks for those who were killed defending our nation. In some parts of the country, this holiday is called “Decoration Day” because people spruce up graves of all loved ones and put fresh flowers on the graves. The symbol of Memorial Day is the red poppy.
