Today is the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time, and it is Father’s Day in the 3 major nations of North America: Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America.
In the Gospel passage today from St. Mark (4: 26-34), we hear two parables that Jesus told the crowds that were following him. One was about how after a man sows seeds in the ground, they grow into fruit or grain that can be used for food. The second parable was about the tiny mustard seed that can grow into such a large bush, that there is plenty of room for even birds of the air to come and make their nests.
What a perfect Gospel passage for today, for with mothers, fathers share in helping children grow and flourish and one day start their adult lives on their own. To prepare a human begin from birth to the stage of “leaving the nest” is a profoundly complex and awesome vocation. Therefore, it is wise that today we honor all the men whom God has chosen to be fathers of children. Happy Father’s Day!
