OT 12 B – Jesus Calms the Storm

On this Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we read the following story about how Jesus calmed a storm at sea:

“On that day, as evening drew on, he said to them, ‘Let us cross to the other side.’  Leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat just as he was.  And other boats were with him.  A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up.  Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion.  They woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’  He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Quiet! Be still!’   The wind ceased and there was great calm.  Then he asked them, ‘Why are you terrified?  Do you not yet have faith?’  They were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?’” (Mark 4: 35-41).

Though this story is beautiful and intriguing in and of itself, it has a deeper and more lasting meaning for the ages.  The moral of the story is that Jesus is with us always.  We can turn to him in the storms of our lives.  And because Jesus is God the Son, we can say, “God is always with us.”

Though we most likely won’t be in ships tossed around the ocean, we all experience “storms” in our lives: lost loves; deaths of loved ones; lost jobs; health problems; difficulties with children; financial problems; and a host of other things.  And even though it sometimes feels we are alone and God is not looking out for us, God is always on duty, and always in charge.

That doesn’t mean everything will be solved in the way we want, but with faith, we will receive the graces to cope with whatever God has in mind for us.
