On this Seventeen Sunday in Ordinary Time, we read Jesus telling his disciples what the Kingdom of Heaven is like. He says: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it” (Matthew 13: 44-46).
For Christians, our faith in God is the most precious thing we have, and all of our other gifts are secondary. Sometimes, though, we forget that when we get caught up in the drama of the world and all the shiny things that dazzle us with their sparkle. We need to remember that in the end, we can take none of the dazzling things with us to our eternal home. Are there things that get in the way of putting God first in our lives?
