On this Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we the famous words from the Book of Ecclesiastes (1: 2), “Vanity of vanity!  All things are vanity!”  What the author is telling us is that the things of this world are fleeting.  Therefore, wise persons put greater emphasis on heaven.

In the Gospel reading of today (Luke 12: 13-21), we hear the parable of the “rich fool.”  He was so delighted that his harvest was so abundant, that he ordered his barns to be torn down so he could build bigger ones.  Then, he could sit back and “eat, drink, and be merry.”  But, alas, that very night, his life would end.  The moral of the story is to store up treasure in heaven, not on earth.

Does that mean that the things of this world are bad?  No.  After all, God created this world.  Does it mean we should not use the things of this world?  Of course, not, we need to use things of this world.  Today’s Scripture means we should treasure the things of the world, use them wisely, but do not fall in love with them, for they are transitory.  In the United States, people have a saying that reflects this: “You can’t take it with you!”

Wise people, therefore, are grateful for things in this world, use them correctly, but never forget that they are merely passing through this life to heaven.
