In 2021, Pope Francis created a new holiday in the Church, World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. He set the day to be celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July, the same week the Church celebrates the feast of Jesus’ grandparents, Ss. Joachim and Anne (July 26). However, the U.S. Catholic Bishops moved this celebration to the Sunday following Labor Day in the United States.
The purpose of this day is to honor the elderly among us and treasure the wisdom they have gained through the years, wisdom usually born from making mistakes. And because of the advances in technology, physical sciences, and behavioral sciences, today more and more people are living longer lives. Let’s do our part to show them special consideration and love.
Happy World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly!
