OT 32 A – The Wise Virgins

Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, which means there are only two more Sundays left in the Church Year after today.  And as we get closer and closer to the end of the Church Year, the Scripture passages have more and more to do with life after life.  Today’s Scripture is no exception.

On this day, we read in the Gospel of Matthew the Parable of the Ten Virgins.  Jesus told this parable to give a glimpse of the “kingdom of heaven.”  In the story, there were ten virgins whose job it was to keep watch for the arrival of the bridegroom.  Five were wise and five foolish.

The wise virgins bought extra oil for their lamps so that they would not run out in case the bridegroom was late returning home. The foolish ones, however, did not plan for a late return.  Sure enough, the bridegroom was late, and the foolish virgins’ lamps had gone out; they had no light to welcome the groom.

Jesus summed up the moral of the story by saying: “Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour” (Matthew 25: 13).

Are we living our lives in such a way that we can always say, “My bag is packed, and I’m ready to go should the Lord call me”?

Fr Bob, yesterday at Mass Deacon John Walsh gave the homily on this Gospel. Like you he is a natural born preacher , just super. Our Lord has chosen well again, as usual.
