Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time.
In 2017, Pope Francis declared that the Church should celebrate the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time as the “Day of the Poor.” The original theme for this day was “Let us love, not with words but with deeds.” The first Day of the Poor was celebrated on November 19, 2017. The theme of the World Day of the Poor for 2024 comes from the Book of Sirach: “The prayer of the poor rises up to God” (Sir 21: 5).
Since that time, Catholic Christians have celebrated this day in many ways in addition to the regular ways they fight systemic poverty and serve the immediate needs of the poor.
The above photo shows members of our parish sitting on the road after the bus they were traveling in crashed new the Alubarén community of Concepción. Amazingly, nobody was killed. The overwhelming majority of the people of the parish of San Francisco de Asís – Reitoca lives in poverty.
