Today, Catholic Christians celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the Catholic Church in particular and Christianity in general.

On this day, the Holy Spirit descended on the early disciples, bringing them many gifts to be able to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to all the world.

Like those disciples more than 2,000 years ago, we, too, receive the Holy Spirit at our Baptism.  And like the early disciples, we are blessed with many gifts with which to serve the Lord.

The photo above shows Pentecost Day at our sister parish, the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary in Wilmington, North Carolina.  On this day, the parish has a custom of setting up informational tables to discuss the various ministries available in the parish.  The hope is that the parishioners would find a ministry or two in which to get involved to use their gifts.  The Basilica Shrine of St. Mary has many ministries.  For example, there almost 40 Hispanic ministries!  So, there is something for everyone in which to get involved.

How are you using the gifts the Holy Spirit brought you on your baptism day to serve God by serving others?
