On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda coordinated and executed four terrorist attacks on two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. In addition, it hijacked a plane that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks against the United States, thousands of Americans showed how “everyday Americans” are also often heroes.
One of the first responders to this tragedy was a Franciscan priest, Fr. Mychal Judge (Photo), a Chaplain of the New York Fire Department. He rushed into the north tower of the World Trade Center that had been hit, offering prayers and aiding all those in need. He was killed by debris flying into the north tower’s lobby from the south tower that had also been hit. His body was marked as #0001.
Today, Americans all over the world remember the fateful day of September 11, 2001, and we honor the brave men and women who helped during that time of crisis, people like Fr. Mychal Judge.
