Simplicity in decoration

The parish in which I serve, San Francisco de Asís, is a very poor mountain parish with almost 40 churches scattered over 125 square miles.  The vast majority of the people live in poverty.

As a result of being poor, people are used to “making do” with what they have.  Because Honduras has climates that are conducive to growing flowers all year round, flowers, leaves, palms, and other vegetation are popular resources that the people use to decorate the churches for Mass and other celebrations.

The photo we have today is from the church of Espíritu Santo (Holy Spirit) in the Reitocan community of Samalares Abajo.  It is a simple candle sitting on the altar nestled in a branch from a magnolia tree.  It’s beautiful in its simplicity.
