In the above photo, we see a soccer team practicing in the stadium of the pueblo of Reitoca, seat of the municipality of Reitoca and seat of the parish in which I serve, San Francisco de Asís.

Soccer, called “fútbol” in Spanish, is an ideal sport for poor areas of the world, for all one needs is a ball.  Almost every community in the mountains of southern Honduras where I live and serve as a missionary priest has a soccer field of some sort.  For those without a formal field, it common to see boys playing soccer in the dusty roads using two rocks as “goal posts.”

The team of the pueblo of Reitoca often plays teams from the villages of Reitoca such as Agua Caliente, El Higuerito, El Limón, El Rodeo, Guanijiquil, Rebalse, Samalares Abajo, Samalares Arriba, San José, Santa Cruz, and Yigüilaca.  The team also plays outside of the municipality of Reitoca on occasion.
