March 19 is the first feast of St. Joseph, husband of Jesus’ mother Mary. However, because March 19 falls on a Sunday this year, we celebrate the feast today, Monday, March 20. (The second feast of St. Joseph is May 1, when we celebrate his role as a worker.)
Not much factual information is known about Joseph, but we know he was of the House of David and a carpenter. Often, he is presented as an older man, but this is not biblical. In fact, he may have been younger than Mary, and many Bible scholars believe Joseph and Mary were very likely teenagers when Jesus was born.
The Bible tells us that God spoke to Joseph in dreams, and Joseph obeyed the messages. For example, he took Mary into his home even when he learned she was pregnant and he was not the father, and he led the Holy Family to safety to escape King Herod’s genocide of male children.
