Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. The feast not only celebrates St. Joseph, but it celebrates the idea that workers and their work is noble and should be treated as such. St. Joseph is a patron saint of both work and workers.
In Catholic Christianity, work is seen as something beautiful, something to be treasured. If you have ever been laid off or unable to find a job you desperately need to live, you know just how valuable work is.
Likewise, Catholic social teaching holds that just as work is noble, even more so are workers. Workers, in the Catholic vision, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. They should have a decent work environment and receive a just wage for their labor. They have a right to form unions and to have a voice in their labor. In the documents of Vatican II, when we work, we become “co-creators with God.”
Our challenge is to respect people and their work. How do you cherish your work?
