Today, we celebrate the feast of St. Lawrence (San Lorenzo), the patron saint of Alubarén, F.M., Honduras.  Alubarén is one of the five municipalities of our parish, the others being Curarén, La Libertad, Reitoca, and San Miguelito.

Though there are many St. Lawrence’s in the Catholic Church, the one we celebrate today was a deacon in Rome in the Third Century.  Legend says that when Lawrence knew he was going to be martyred for the faith, and knowing that the Roman officials were going to demand he turn over all the Church’s finances to them, he immediately gave away all the money to the poor and needy.  Then, when the Roman officials came for him and demanded he turn over the money, he gathered all the poor and needy and presented them to the officials, saying, “These are the treasures of the Church.”

Legend says that Lawrence was burned to death.  He is the patron saint of many places as well as and he is a patron saint of a variety of occupations and activities such as barbeques, brewers, chefs, cooks, comedians, deacons, librarians, miners, poor people, restauranteurs, seminarians, wine growers and wine makers, and others.
