This is the sanctuary of the church of Pedrero, a community of La Libertad. The name of the church is María Auxiliadora (Mary, Help of Christians).
Though the people and community are very poor, they are rich in devotion and commitment to their Faith. They think nothing of walking two hours, one-way, on unpaved mountain paths to come to church services.
In this photo, we see some “early birds” who have arrived to attend Mass. Because of its isolated location, Mass is a rare occurrence. On Thursdays and Sundays, the people have a Liturgy of the Word service conducted by Delegados de la Palabra, men and women who have special education to lead the community.
