In our parish, San Francisco de Asís, we now have 90 churches with four priests.  The churches are scattered over an area of 250-square miles of mountains.  Roads in between the communities are unpaved and, in many places, very rough to say the least.  In fact, some communities are inaccessible at times during heavy rains.

In some of the more remote areas, people rarely have Mass.  Fortunately, though, they do have Liturgy of the Word services every Thursday and Sunday led by Delegados de la Palabra, Delegates of the Word.  These are men and women specially trained to run the churches of the parish and be the official Catholic presence of the communities.

Here in Honduras, firecrackers are a very big deal.  People use firecrackers to celebrate just about everything – Christmas and other holidays, birthdays, baptisms, weddings, and, the coming of a priest to the community to celebrate Mass.

In the above photo, we see Tomasa Molina Molina Guzmán of the Curarén community of El Tule.  She is holding firecrackers that will go off when Mass begins.
