Leo, who was known as Bob to his friends, is the first American pope and the first one to be an Augustinian friar. Because he was born and grew up in the Chicago, Illinois, Chicagoans are especially delighted with his election as are all Americans.
Peruvians are also especially delighted with the selection of the new pope, for he served them as a missionary Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and he even became a Peruvian citizen while remaining an American citizen.
