Tomorrow, Catholic Christians celebrate Holy Thursday.

Here in the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa, priests will gather with our archbishop, Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez, to celebrate the annual Chrism Mass in the Basilica of Our Lady of Suyapa.  In that Mass, we will bless the three oils that the parishes of the archdioceses will use during the coming year.  We will also renew our priestly promises to serve the people.

Then, in the evening, the priests will celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in their individual parishes.  At the beginning of this Mass, Lent officially ends for Catholic Christians, and we enter a three-day season called Triduum.

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper is the only Mass of the year when the celebrant kneels down to wash the feet of twelve people, representing the twelve apostles.  The washing of feet is to symbolize that as ordained priests, we are to be servant-leaders, just as Jesus was.  It is this Mass that is the symbolic celebrating of the institution of the Eucharist (Mass), the institution of the Blessed Sacrament or Holy Communion, and the institution of the ordained priesthood.  That is why priests throughout the world celebrate this as their special feast day.
