In the United States, the last Sunday of September is called Priesthood Sunday in the Catholic Church. This day was created by Serra International.
Serrans are lay Catholics dedicated to supporting vocations to the priesthood, the religious life, and to the permanent diaconate.
Though Serrans know that all vocations are noble, and that every baptized person shares in the “priesthood of all believers,” they also know that without ordained priests, we would have no Eucharist (Mass), no Reconciliation, no Sacrament of the Sick, and no Confirmation. Serrans also know that the ordained priesthood has suffered immensely because of priests who have abused youth. And they know that as the number of Catholics throughout the world grows, the number of priests decreases. Therefore, they wanted to have a special day, like a “Father’s Day” for ordained Catholic priests, to give thanks.
So, Happy Priesthood Sunday to all ordained priests!
