Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. So, if you have a traditional Catholic Advent wreath, you would light two purple candles.
In today’s Gospel reading from Matthew (3: 1-12), we’re introduced to the herald – or announcer – of the long-awaited Messiah. The herald’s name was John.
St. Mathew describes John this way: “John wore clothing made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and honey.” Matthew says that John baptizing people in the Jordan River for forgiveness of sins.
Many people were attracted to John, and many thought that he might be the Messiah. John, however, set them straight by telling them, “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
