Today in most countries, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Here in Honduras and many other nations, the cross of Christ is celebrated on May 3, the feast of the Discovery of the Holy Cross.
The Holy Cross is important in Christianity because it is a symbol of our faith. It is a reminder that Jesus the Christ gave his life for us as a victim of capital punishment.
The Holy Cross is also a reminder for Catholic Christians that capital punishment, used almost exclusive against men and not women, is an intrinsically grave evil and against Catholic teaching.
In the above photo, we see a cross decorated outside the Church of Medalla Milagrosa (Miraculous Medal) in the Alubarén community of El Carreto.
