In the United States, the last Sunday of September is called Priesthood Sunday in the Catholic Church.

Though we know that all vocations are noble, and that every baptized person shares I the “priesthood of all believers,” they also know that without ordained priests, we would have no Eucharist (Mass), no Reconciliation, no Sacrament of the Sick, and no Confirmation.  Serrans also know that the ordained priesthood has suffered immensely because of priests who have abused youth.  And they know that as the number of Catholics throughout the world grows, the number of priests decreases.  Therefore, they wanted to have a special day, like a “Father’s Day” for ordained Catholic priests, to give thanks.

The above photo is Fr. Bob Kus in the garden of a souvenir store, La Banana, in Valle de Ángeles, F.M., Honduras.  Fr. Bob is a missionary priest of the Diocese of Raleigh who lives and works in the mountains of southern Honduras, part of the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa.

So, Happy Priesthood Sunday to all ordained priests!
