On this Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we read of Jesus calling four men to follow him: Peter and his brother Andrew, and two sons of Zebedee: James and John.  We read from Matthew:

“As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.   He said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’   At once they left their nets and followed him.  He walked along from there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him” (4: 18-22).

The Bible does not say anything about the ages of the early apostles, but many believe they were most likely teenagers, and that Peter was the eldest, being maybe in his early 20’s.

Like Peter, Andrew, James, and John, each of us are called, by virtue of our baptism, to be followers of Jesus.  And like the apostles, we are far from perfect; we are “works in progress.”  Fortunately, however, God is willing to help us on our life journeys as we strive to use our gifts to serve him by serving others.

In 2019, Pope Francis declared the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time to be known as “Word of God” Sunday for Catholic Christians.  This would be good time renew your love for the Bible and the wealth of riches it contains.
