On this Fourth Sunday of Lent, we read about the Call of David in the First Book of Samuel (16: 1b, 6-7,10-13a).  In today’s story, it was time to choose a king, and Jesse presented seven sons to Samuel.  Samuel rejected all seven of them.  Instead, he chose the youngest son, David, who was watching over the sheep.

In the story, the Lord reminded Samuel not to judge by appearances.  The Lord says, “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.”

This passage is very important to keep in mind when we look at the men that he calls to be ordained priests, for often, we can imagine so many other men who we think would be so much better candidates.

Perhaps that is why we always need to keep in mind that God’s ways are not our ways.
