Happy Father’s Day!

Today is the Feast of Saint Joseph, husband of Mary who helped her raise Jesus.  In many Catholic-majority nations, such as Honduras, March 19 is, therefore, Father’s Day.  So, Happy Father’s Day to all fathers, fathers-to-be, foster father, stepfathers, and grandfathers!  May God bless you and your vocation as father abundantly.

The Bible doesn’t tell us too much about Saint Joseph.  For example, we have no idea how old he was when Jesus was born.  Many Bible scholars today believe he and Mary were both around 12-14 years of age when Jesus was born, and there is nothing in the Bible saying that Joseph was younger, older, or the same age as Mary.

We know, however, that he was a skilled laborer, a “carpenter” according to the Bible.  Even this piece of information has been cast into doubt today, for where the Holy Family lived, there are few trees.  However, there are quarries.  Some scholars believe that perhaps Joseph worked with rock instead of wood.

He also helped Mary protect the Child Jesus from danger when the king declared male genocide against Hebrew boys 2 years of age and younger.

God bless all fathers today and always!
