Today Catholic Christians celebrate the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. On this day, Jesus tells us:
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light” (Matthew 11: 28-30).
Until I was an adult, I had no idea what a “yoke” was in the way Jesus was using it. The only “yoke” I knew about was inside an egg. But I have since learned that a yoke is a wooden crosspiece that fastens over the necks of two animals and attaches to a plough or cart that they are to pull. When the pair of animals work together, the job that one animal could not accomplish on its own, suddenly becomes doable.
In the photo above, taken in the municipality of La Libertad, F.M., Honduras, we see two bulls attached by a yoke so that together they are able to pull a wagon.
When we give ourselves over to the Lord, we become “yoked” with the Lord. Then, we can accomplish amazing things that, by ourselves, we could never accomplish.
How are you yoked to the Lord?
Amen.
