Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, or “showing,” of the Christ Child to visitors from the East. These visitors, sometimes called the Three Kings or Three Wise Men, followed a star that brought them to the Christ Child. When they found him, they gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Traditionally, these gifts are said to represent Jesus’ kingship, divinity, and eventual death on the cross.
There are so many ways to interpret this the story of the Epiphany, and in each of them, we can get a glimpse of the story’s magic. I like to think that like the Visitors from the East, each of us is called to follow a dream or star, and we call this dream or star our vocation. No two vocational calls are identical, for each of them have elements unique to our history. But by faithfully following the dream that Spirit plants in our souls, we are led right to Jesus. And that is, after all, where we are called to end up.
What is your dream? How is the journey to its fulfillment going for you?
In the photo above, we see the Three Magi visiting our sister parish, the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary in Wilmington, North Carolina.
This is probable my the oldest memory of the Bible.
